Japanese far-right party Sanseito has made it an official position that anime and manga should be produced under state authority and subject to censorship.
On their official page listing their positions, Sanseito has a section titled: Manga, anime and games in Japan as a cultural asset, we hope to further develop it both domestically and internationally. Building development and industrial infrastructure (Translation: Google)
One of the bullet points clearly spells out an intent to censor anime and shift it from an economic product, to one designed to push intentionally curated social values.
- The value of manga, anime, and games will not be judged based on economic rationality, but rather authority will be delegated to the Agency for Cultural Affairs to ensure their healthy development as culture.
Its unclear what (if any) titles Sanseito has in mind when making this point, but its clear that the ultra-conservative party wants anime and manga to no longer be made based on sound economic decisions, but instead on promoting messages approved by the government.
The partys decision has angered Japanese citizens, who are defensive of the countrys existing free speech protections which are usually at risk from external threats rather than internal political parties.
At present, Sanseito is considered a fringe political party, but has made inroads during a time of political uncertainty, exacerbated by exploitative tourism and dwindling US stability.
